Alternative Risk Transfer: How Bermuda’s Regulation Keeps Pace with the Developing Risk Landscape

‘Convergence’ is a rarely used term these days.  Over the last decade, the traditional reinsurance markets have fully embraced third-party capital and the capital markets have added significant capacity to traditional risk transfer in a variety of ways, including the Insurance Linked Securities (ILS) sector.  From catastrophe bonds to collateralized reinsurance to sidecars, the ILS sector is continually evolving, adapting and growing in record numbers.

Learning objectives:

  • Find out why Bermuda’s insurance regulatory regime has aided the development of alternative risk transfer and how the development of Bermuda’s insurance legal and regulatory framework provides an attractive platform for ever-changing market conditions and the evolution of alternative sources of risk.
  • Hear first-hand from members of ILS Bermuda and the Bermuda Monetary Authority the particulars of the new classes of re/insurers at the forefront of a rapidly evolving, and competitive, risk landscape.

Moderator: Sarah Demerling – Partner – Corporate, Finance, Funds & Insurance Group – Walkers Bermuda

  • Nicolas Plianthos – Senior Vice President, Account Executive, Insurance Linked Sureties – Marsh
  • Taijuan Talbot – Principal (Insurance), Alternative Capital Specialist – Bermuda Monetary Authority
